What a move in the Inner West actually involves
The Inner West is not one place. It runs from harbour peninsulas at Balmain to the Parramatta River at Concord West, across five council areas and roughly a century of housing. Four things about that decide how a move here actually runs.
Nineteenth-century houses, twenty-first-century furniture
The Inner West was largely built out before 1940, and it shows in the doorways. Terraces and semis across Newtown, Camperdown and Enmore have narrow frontages and staircases that turn; the Federation belt through Haberfield and Dulwich Hill adds columned verandas and original leadlight; Balmain and Lilyfield are compact workers’ cottages. Almost nothing here was designed around a modern three-seater.
Peninsulas, ridges and streets laid out for horses
Balmain, Birchgrove, Drummoyne and Abbotsford all sit on peninsulas — one way in, no second route if the street is blocked. Glebe, Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill carry real gradient, which changes how a loaded trolley is handled. And across the region the street grid predates two-car households, so kerb space, not furniture volume, is usually what decides the length of the day.
Five councils, five different sets of rules
This is the part that catches people out. Our coverage spans five councils and none of them handle removalist parking the same way. Inner West Council has no short-term removalist permit at all — its works zone process is built for construction and can take up to eight weeks. City of Sydney is the opposite: a removalist’s truck can legally use a visitor permit, $30 for ten. City of Canada Bay publishes no removalist permit, Burwood issues none for trucks over 4.5 tonnes, and Canterbury-Bankstown asks for about a week’s notice. Our depot is in Balmain, inside the area. The average suburb we cover is 7 kilometres away by road, about 11 minutes off-peak, and 33 of the 41 sit inside the ten-kilometre radius where we charge no travel at all. Balmain East and Birchgrove are 1.1 kilometres from the yard. On an hourly-rate move, depot travel is one of the quietest ways a bill grows — and for most of this region it never appears.

Q.What is the average cost of removalists in Australia?
Local moves are usually charged hourly. Across Sydney, two movers and a truck commonly fall between roughly $150 and $220 an hour, so a typical two-bedroom local move lands somewhere between about $600 and $1,000. Our rate is $195 an hour, GST included, charged in 15-minute increments.
Q.Why are removalists so expensive?
Most of the cost is people and time, not the truck. An hourly rate covers two trained movers, a maintained vehicle, trolleys, blankets, straps and transit protection, plus insurance, superannuation and the hours spent travelling and loading. A cheap hourly rate usually reappears later as a slower day, a damage claim, or an invoice with extras on it.
Q.What are the red flags with moving companies?
No written quote; a cash-only deposit; no ABN or no transit protection you can read; subcontracted crews the company cannot name; a rate quoted without a single question about stairs, lifts or parking; and reviews that are all five stars and all from the same month. A removalist who does not ask about access cannot give you an accurate price.

Q.Can you handle apartment and strata moves?
Yes — lifts, stairs, shared entrances, loading zones and strata access are routine for us. In the newer buildings the loading dock and service lift usually need booking through building management about a week ahead, in a fixed time window. Tell us the slot and we will build the day around it.
Q.How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable. End of month — and the last Friday of the month in particular — books out further ahead than most people expect, as do the days either side of a long weekend.
Q.Who is the cheapest removalist in Sydney?
Cheapest by hourly rate and cheapest by final invoice are rarely the same company. A lower rate with a longer minimum, a travel charge from a distant depot, or a two-person crew sent to a three-person job will usually cost more by the end of the day. Compare the total for your actual property, not the headline rate.
