Moving house can be challenging, but it’s even harder for pets. They don’t understand why their environment is changing. There are also additional risks when moving with pets, such as them going missing (in search of their previous home) or behavioural changes due to the new environment. Like all of us, pets need a little bit of TLC during the moving process.
We’ve compiled a list of 4 tricks to help make moving with pets that little bit easier.
Decide Where Your Pet Will Be on Moving Day
Before moving house, it’s important to have an idea of where your pet will be on moving day. In the most ideal situation, we recommend having your pet go to a friend or family members place, somewhere familiar. However, we know that this isn’t always possible. Placing your pet in an animal boarding home for the day is a good way to ensure they will be out of harms way. Otherwise, pick a safe space away from all the hustle and bustle, where your pet can relax. If you have a crate, it’s always best to keep your pet in it, to avoid any escape attempts. This is especially important with doors opening and closing and people coming and going.
Prepare an Overnight Kit
With all the packing and organising going on, it’s important to ensure your furry friend will have an overnight kit pre-prepared. This overnight kit should include all the essentials, such as food & water bowls, treats, toys, bedding and any medication. Be sure to have this kit somewhere you can get to without any trouble and don’t forget to label it!
Speak With Your Local Vet
If you’re moving out of area, it’s important to speak with your local vet and grab a copy of your pet’s records. Your local vet might even be able to recommend a new vet in in the area you’re moving to. Additionally, it’s important to change your microchip details and collar details to your new address. Since your pet will be in an unfamiliar area, it’s essential to have all your details up to date in case of an emergency.
Establish A Safe Space in the New Home
New places can be scary for our pets. As soon as you arrive to the new house, we recommend finding some place secure and cosy for your pet to settle in. An area out of the main foot-traffic is always recommended. Before you let you pet into a backyard or room, be sure to double check there are no opportunities for escape routes.
